Perseus & Medusa brings the Gorgon myth to silver
One glance, and flesh turns to stone.
A hiss breaks the silence. Snakes frame a face no mortal dares to look upon. This is Medusa — one of the Gorgons, whose gaze brings death to anyone who dares to meet it. To face her seems impossible. Yet this is exactly the task given to Perseus.
King Polydectes sends Perseus to bring back Medusa’s head, certain that he will never return. But Perseus enters her world armed with more than courage. His strength lies in remaining focused when a single mistake could be his last. Using the reflection in his shield, he finds a way to see what he cannot face directly. Their eyes never meet — and victory is his.
Yet Medusa’s power does not end with her defeat. Her severed head becomes more than a trophy, retaining the deadly force of her gaze. Over time, her image — the gorgoneion — appears on shields, temples and coins as a symbol of protection. What once inspired terror becomes a guardian.
Perseus and Medusa captures this striking contrast between heroic triumph and the enduring power of the Gorgon. Sculpted in high relief, the composition brings the confrontation to life through depth, antique finish and selective gilding.
Struck in 2 oz of .999 silver, the coin measures 45 mm in diameter and features 2.0 mm high relief, Antique Finish and Selective Gilding. Issued by Cameroon with a face value of 2000 Francs, the mintage is limited to just 500 pieces worldwide.
The king is still waiting. He does not yet know that Perseus is on his way home — or what he carries with him.
