Jerusalem Knights opens the Holy Knights series
The gates open at dawn. Beyond them waits a road of dust, heat, and uncertainty. Knights ride out beneath the True Cross, carrying not only a sacred relic, but the weight of Jerusalem itself.
They belong to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the earliest Christian chivalric orders, founded to guard Christ’s tomb and protect those who came to pray in the Holy City. Their duty was not conquest. It was to stand watch, to defend, and to remain faithful to the place entrusted to them.
Jerusalem Knights captures the moment before the battle, when faith, duty, and the fate of Jerusalem still rode together.
In 1187, that duty led them toward Hattin. Surrounded by Saladin’s forces, cut off from water and weakened by smoke and exhaustion, the Crusader army faced a battle it could not win. Thousands were lost. The True Cross disappeared into the chaos, and only months later, Jerusalem fell.
Yet the Order did not vanish with the city it had sworn to protect. It survived without walls, without a stronghold, and without the relic once carried into battle.
This is not a story of victory, but of faith, sacrifice, and a duty that endured long after the battlefield fell silent.
Eight shields. Eight orders.
Created as a custom project in collaboration with our U.S. partners, SDE, Jerusalem Knights opens Holy Knights, a new eight-coin series exploring the history and legacy of the great Christian chivalric orders.
The obverse features eight shields, each representing one of the Christian chivalric orders that will be revealed throughout the Holy Knights series.
The shield of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre marks the beginning. Seven others remain, each holding the symbol and legacy of another order whose story is yet to be told.
Which shield will be revealed next?
Eight orders. Eight shields. Eight legacies. One history forged by faith, duty, and sacrifice.
