PERSEUS & MEDUSA

A hiss breaks the silence. Snakes frame a face no mortal dares to look upon. One glance, and flesh turns to stone.

This is Medusa, one of the Gorgons, whose gaze brings death to anyone who dares to meet it. To face her seems impossible. Yet this is exactly the task given to Perseus.

Every quest has a beginning. For Perseus, this beginning was meant to be the end. King Polydectes desired his mother, Danaë, and saw an opportunity to get rid of her son. He sent Perseus to bring back Medusa’s head, certain he would never return.

Yet Perseus entered her world armed with more than courage. His strength lay in his ability to think clearly when fear urged him to act and remain focused when a single mistake could be his last. Using the reflection in his shield, he found a way to see what he couldn’t face directly. Their eyes never met, and victory was his. The severed head became more than a trophy. Even after her defeat, Medusa’s gaze retained its power.

Over time, Medusa’s image, known as the gorgoneion, appeared on shields, temples and coins as a symbol of protection. What once inspired terror became a guardian.

Perseus & Medusa captures the striking contrast between the hero’s triumph and the enduring power of the Gorgon.

The king is still waiting. He does not yet know that Perseus is on his way home — or what he carries with him.
